Saint Kitts and Nevis
The
Saint Kitts Bullfinch (Wikipedia) (Lost Birds) (BHL)
is an extinct endemic bird that is sometimes considered a full species and is often considered a subspecies of the still surviving Puerto Rican Bullfinch (eBird).
Insects known only from Saint Kitts and Nevis include the ground beetles Platynus (or Dyscolus) racquelae (PLAZI) and Platynus (or Dyscolus) duportei (PLAZI), an
undescribed fungus weevil of the genus Ormiscus (p.
9 of Univ.
Nebraska pdf), another weevil Huaca pacha (GBIF), a bee Microsphecodes (or Baeosphecodes) kittensis
(p. 55 of IEV WM
pdf), the braconid wasps Opius fennahi (GBIF) and Opius flaveolaris (GBIF), a
planthopper Tangia
(or Neurotmeta)
bipatriata
(BHL), and a bat fly Nycterophilia bilineata
(ResearchGate).
Other endemic invertebrates include the tarantulas Nesipelma
insulare (theraphosidae.cz WM) (ResearchGate)
and Cyrtopholis (or Nesipelma) media
(BHL),
a ground spider Cesonia
maculata (p. 42 of AMNH pdf),
a huntsman spider Neostasina
oualie (GBIF),
a springtail Metasinella
radkei (ResearchGate),
and the land snails Bulimulus
gittenbergeri (fig. 47 at BHL)
(GBIF)
and
Bulimulus
ouallensis (fig. 50 at BHL).
A fern, Asplenium
malcolm-smithii (GBIF) (BHL),
is known only from Mount Liamuiga on Saint Kitts. Another fern, Amauropelta (or Thelypteris) muscicola
(GBIF)
(BHL),
has often been considered endemic to Nevis, but apparently occurs also
on Guadeloupe (p. 39 of IRF WM
pdf).
Endemic lichens include Ocellularia liamuiga (GBIF) and Astrochapsa lobata (GBIF).
For an overview of the biota see the "Biodiversity Profile of St. Kitts
and Nevis" (IRF WM
pdf). Saint
Kitts and Nevis
are part of the Caribbean Islands
biodiversity hotspot (Biodiversity Hotspots WM).
