Wake Island
Wake Island is a territory of the United States of America and is protected as a national wildlife refuge (fws.gov).
The Wake Rail Hypotaenidia wakensis (Wikipedia) (p. 9 of Smithsonian pdf) was a bird found nowhere else until its extinction in 1945.
Insects known solely from Wake Atoll include a longhorn beetle Paremeopedus wakensis (Cerambycidae Species WM), a plant bug Campylomma wakeana (Discover Life) (fig. 1049 at AMNH), a parasitic wasp Eupelmus pacificus (p. 11 of NHM-London pdf), and several weevils: Rhyncogonus fallax (fig. 19 on p. 31 of HBS WM pdf), Sphaerorhinus pallescens (p. 10 of Bishop Museum WM pdf), Sphaerorhinus sordidus (p. 11 of Bishop Museum WM pdf), and Microcryptorhynchus (or Miocalles) wilkesii (UH-Manoa pdf).
The molluscs Cyclochlamys wakensis (ResearchGate), Mokumea gracilicostata (PLAZI), Speirazafra wakensis (PLAZI), Zafra thaanumi (PLAZI), and Caecum wakense (Zootaxa) have also been described from Wake Atoll. Soft corals known only from near Wake Atoll include Calyptrophora lyra (NOAA) (GBIF).
An endemic species of cotton Gossypium stephensii (CottonGen) (ResearchGate) has recently been described from Wake Atoll.
